Seattle Post-Intelligencer
Beth Winter's
vocal stylings have earned her accolades from coast to coast. Born and
raised in Washington, D.C., she moved to New York in 1981 and after eight
years of "dues-paying gigs" relocated to Seattle to accept her
current position as Professor of Vocal Jazz at Cornish
College of the Arts.
Her formal
training culminated in a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree from the University
of Maryland, and included studies with Jay Clayton, Bobby McFerrin, Sarah
Vaughan, Sheila Jordan, Abbey Lincoln, Kirk Nurock and Jerry Granelli.
In 1981, Beth received the New Vocalists Award at the New York City Women's
Jazz Festival. She has performed at some of the nation's most prestigious
jazz clubs, including the Blue Note, Birdland, and Visiones in New York,
and worked with a veritable "who's who" of jazz greats including
Jessica Williams, Larry Fuller, Norman Simmons, Paul West, Kirk Lightsey,
Victor Lewis, Bill Mays, Charlie Persip, Paul McCandless, Fred Hersch,
Kenny Werner, Harvie Swartz, Jack Wilkins, Harold Mabern, Joey Baron,
and a host of others.
Beth is today
a fixture on the vibrant Seattle jazz scene, where she figures prominently
both as a performer and as a guide to emerging talents. Beth is also known
for her work with Seattle jazz luminaries such as Julian Priester, Floyd
Standifer, Buddy Catlett, Hadley Caliman, Jeff Johnson, and Hans Teuber,
and for touring Seattle public schools in a series of instructional concerts
sponsored by Earshot
Jazz. Beth's master classes and singers' showcases at Tula's are highly
anticipated and exceedingly popular events.
Beth Winter is currently planning a cd
project which will join the cream of her East Coast and West Coast colleagues
in an exploration of classic songs rendered with urgency, love and professional
panache.
