Something New In the West — The LaJJazzO in America
The LaJJazzO, located in Brandenburg, was founded twenty years ago. In 2008, Jiggs Whigham, an internationally renowned jazz trombonist and big band conductor (BBC Big Band), took over the artistic direction of the band. Under his leadership, the Youth Jazz Orchestra of Brandenburg blossomed into a young big band which meets all the highest musical standards. This was followed by awards and prizes for the young jazz musicians from Brandenburg.
In its anniversary year, the LaJJazzO guests after concerts in Berlin and Brandenburg in the mother country of jazz and presents itself at its 17-day U.S. tour for the first time a large audience in North America. From July 20 to August 4, 2014, the LaJJazzO plays seven concerts under the direction of Jiggs Whigham in legendary jazz clubs like the Tula's Jazz Club in Seattle, Yoshi's in Oakland or at Lake Tahoe. On top of that it takes part in the prestigious Jazz Workshop in Port Townsend with American top-class Jazz musicians. In the concerts, the young big band pays homage to the music of American composers and arrangers such as Rob McConnell and John Clayton and also presents European big band music of Helmut Brandt and Steve Gray.
To start off the U.S. tour the LaJJazzO participates a week in the prestigious Jazz Workshop in Port Townsend. The musical and social exchange with American musicians of the same age and working with top international instructors such as Bill Holman, Benny Green, Jeff Hamilton or Gary Smulyan will be the highlight for the young musicians of the LaJJazzO.
On July 27, 2014 begins the exciting life on tour. For the first time the Youth Jazz Orchestra of Brandenburg will present itself to a large audience in North America with two concerts at Tula 's Jazz Club in Seattle. These two concerts will be recorded and later released on a live CD.
Already on July 29, 2014 another highlight expects the musicians: The performance at the famous Yoshi's in Oakland is on the tour schedule. Before the band has to be on stage again in Los Angeles on the July 31, 2014, it stops in the coastal town of Santa Barbara.on July 30.
After two days in Los Angeles, it goes back to the North. The LaJJazzO will play in the Brubeck Institute in Incline Village at the scenic Lake Tahoe, where they will once again come into contact with young American jazz musicians.
After 17 days and 7 concerts, on August 4, 2014 the orchestra starts on its journey home from San Francisco to Germany. In addition to a great number of musical memories, surely, they also will have many new friendships in their luggage.
